Now in its third year, the festival serves a unique role in the cultural life of South Australia. As the only annual event in the state to specifically celebrate classical contemporary music performance and practice, we maintain a reputation for clever programming and the highest artistic calibre, by engaging world-class performers and nurturing vital networks and collaborations locally, nationally and internationally.
Some exciting developments have taken place in 2010. Thanks to a newly established media partnership with ABC Classic FM, audiences will be able to experience three days of inspirational performances by Australia’s leading contemporary
soloists and chamber musicians both as live performances at the ABC Studios in Adelaide and via live broadcasts on ABC Classic FM.
Previously held at venues around the city of Adelaide and McLaren Vale, this 2010 festival will take place entirely in Studio 520 at the Collinswood ABC Studios, providing a more permanent home for the festival as well as highlighting one of Adelaide’s forgotten venues.
Highlighting the period architecture of the studio is lighting and design guru Geoff Cobham and his team at Bluebottle, who are working with Soundstream to reinvigorate the studio space for the duration of the festival. The festival celebrates the connected language of music and architecture with its theme Acoustic Architecture. Over the centuries composers have looked to architecture as inspiration and as an expression of musical syntax. The festival opens with the South Australian première of George Antheil’s own adaption of his Ballet Mécanique, a spectacular work rarely performed because of its practical obstacles: it is scored for four pianos, six percussionists, siren and propeller. The 2010 program resonates with inspiring performers and music. We look forward to seeing you at Studio 520 for what will be a visual and aural spectacle.
