To breathe fresh air through closed eyes
The two Eschers: Maurits, artist of so-called impossible structures, and his nephew Rudolph, composer and music theoretician, were both fascinated by the symbiosis between mathematics and art. They also suffered the tragic dislocation of war, a theme explored through a world premiere by Charles Bodman Rae exploring the still deserted Jewish villages of Poland following the purges of World War 2. The concert finishes with a Soundstream commission by acclaimed Finnish-Australian composer and violinist Erkki Veltheim, who takes us into an electronically transformed sound world where defined process and improvisation is blurred. This concert is a collaboration with Art and Heritage Collections, University of Adelaide, with a concert presentation by Professor Chris Mortensen, scholar of inconsistent images, and Soundstream Collective.

Circle Series
Following their acclaimed Brisbane performance, Soundstream Collective presents Hanna Kulenty’s Circles Series (1994-6) to Adelaide and Melbourne audiences. The series represent Kulenty’s self titled ‘European trance music’, her original version of ‘post-minimalist’ style. The result is music of incredible emotional intensity and sheer sonorous impact, reflecting the richness of the composer’s internal life. One recalls Rainer Maria Rilke’s poetic description of music as “feelings transformed into audible landscape.” This concert is a collaboration with the New Music Network and Soundstream Collective.
“I was speechless for some time afterwards, so affecting were the writing and the performance.” Real Time

Resonance
Soundstream Collective, in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Architects and Samstag Museum of Art, presents Resonance, an event highlighting the parallel creative processes of architecture and music. Resonance- deriving from the Latin to mean ‘echo’ or the Greek- ‘sound’, needs a resonant space in order to be heard. The role of acoustics is fundamental to understanding a city, and the intimate rhythm of its resonance.
It is this symbiosis between music and architecture that informs the second event in the series, to be held at the Anne and Gordon Samstag Museum of Art. Within this context, John Wardle, architect of the Samstag, will give his personal insight into the design of the building. Highlighting the acoustic qualities of the space, Soundstream Collective will give a unique performance of two premieres: UK composer Alec Roth’s Songs in Time of War with libretto by Vikram Seth, and David Kotlowy’s Lovers. Featuring Robert MacFarlane (tenor), Aleksandr Tsiboulski (guitar), Elizabeth Layton (violin) and Carolyn Burgess (harp).

Intriguing Soundscapes
Soundstream Collective brings together some of Australia’s virtuosi players in a concert featuring wind quintets by Alfred Uhl, György Ligeti and Samuel Barber. All three composers found their voices in this genre in surprisingly different ways. While respecting their 19th century musical ancestry, they distilled out of the turmoil of the 20th century’s socio-political cauldron, innovative, sometimes challenging, but always intriguing soundscapes that have imparted new spirit to the ageless phenomenon of music. Also featuring a world premiere by David Harris, written for the Soundstream Collective.
